Renaissance painters knew the power of a triangular configuration.

There is a lot of stability and unity portrayed in this family pyramid configuration. Photo by Drake Busath.

In this image by Drake Busath, there are two triangles (one pointing up and one pointing down), but the overall shape is a circle.

MISTAKE 41

Not Chatting During a Session

Some photographers think they should avoid distracting the model with idle chitchat during a photo session. Pshaw! So untrue!

As a portrait photography teacher, one of my most difficult tasks has been getting students to carry on an audible, continuous dialog during their practice shoots. I inform them that successful photographer “superheroes” never shut up while they are working with their clients. They are showmen—performers. If you are saying, “That’s not me,” count on not achieving your potential.

Clients like being entertained and praised for doing a good job while posing. “Good job,” “Beautiful,” and “Very nice” are all simple—but effective—comments you can make. Above all, don’t mumble from behind the camera. At the very minimum, issue nonsensical noises. Sing or dance. Humor is such a crowd-pleaser. Have a personal collection of jokes and phrases that work to bring smiles and relax clients. It doesn’t matter how many times you use a joke—as long as the audience rotates. Use your most successful “material” over and over. Milk it.
